Propane was officially classified as an Alternative Green Energy by the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the Energy Policy Acts of 1992 and 2005. Here are some of the reasons why propane has earned its “green” status:
- Propane appliances produce as much as 60% less CO2 than electric appliances and 40% less CO2 than wood.
- Unlike natural gas, propane contains no methane. The Energy Research Center has concluded that methane is between 20 and 70 times more powerful than CO2 in creating atmospheric warming, and that leaks of natural gas into the atmosphere are significant enough to negate NG’s somewhat lower CO2 emissions.
- Because propane cannot remain in a liquid state outside a pressurized tank, it poses not contamination threat to surrounding soil or water systems.
